Every year on August 15, Italians pause for one of its most anticipated holidays  Ferragosto. But what exactly is Ferragosto? Where did this tradition begin? And should you plan your visit to Italy around it? From Ancient Rome to Modern Italy the name Ferragosto comes from the Latin phrase Feriae Augusti meaning “Augustus’ Holidays.” This tradition dates back to 18 BC, when Emperor Augustus introduced as much-needed rest offering workers a break from routine life and hard work. Over the centuries, Ferragosto evolved from a Roman imperial holiday into a cherished Italian summer tradition, blending ancient customs with religious celebrations and plenty of food, travel, and leisure.
